Our very own tenor, Stéfan Louw, is bringing a series of opera aria concerts to venues across South Africa. The launch of his production Aria! is set for Sunday 24 October at 3pm at the Joburg Promusica Theatre in Roodepoort.

Louw, who has a remarkable operatic repertoire of local and international productions, is very excited about his new venture. “The idea for the concert came about after I had noticed how many classical singing concerts there were with none staying true to the opera repertoire,” he says. His aim is to bring to true opera aficionados a measure of quality, whilst at the same time encouraging new audiences to appreciate true opera.

The programme consists of arias from different genres in opera. “As many different genres as my fach can perform,” he emphasises. The concert will not only cover a variety of composers to include the better known arias such as Nessun Dorma and La Donna e Mobile, but will also add beautiful lesser known arias like Ah! Fuyez, douce image.

For the launch of this production Louw is teaming up with pianist Ilse Myburgh and mezzo Veramarie Meyer, both acclaimed artists in their discipline. Myburgh has been an accompanist since 1986 and Meyer has a respectable operatic repertoire behind her name.

“I want to expand the public view on how many beautiful arias exist in the repertoire,” Louw exclaims passionately. For this very reason he aims to adapt the programme and supporting artists with each concert as he tours with the production. After Roodepoort, the concert will be performed in Pretoria towards the end of November.
